Some Of The Things We Do To Get Away On Our Days Off

We thought it would be fun to stray from all things financial planning and investment management for a moment, and share with you some of our favorite local area day trip experiences. Yes, even we all take a break now and then!

Here are a few fun experiences from some of the team:

Kathryn:

During the Pandemic when no one was traveling and we were itching to get out of the house, we took a road trip to Indiana Dunes State Park. It was only an hour away; the drive was pretty and it made us feel alive again. Another favorite is driving to the Renaissance Faire on the Wisconsin border. Great food, good entertainment, and a lot of very silly people. If we didn’t eat too much at the Faire, we would stop at an original A&W Root Beer stand with the old speaker order systems and have the food delivered on a tray that attached to our window. Of course, the root beer was served in frosted mugs!

Trevor:

A drive north to Buellton for a quick 9 holes at Zaca Creek Golf Course followed by wine tasting at Stolpman Vineyards and lunch at Panino in Los Olivos.

Todd:

A day at Grand Beach in New Buffalo, sometimes on a bike trip to and from the city.

Joel:

A visit to Volo Bog in Volo, IL to walk through nature looking for turtles, snakes and migrating sandhill cranes that often stop there.

Erin:

Taking a drive up to Cambria, CA to enjoy a walk on Moonstone Beach, brunch at The Hidden Kitchen, and then explore the many area boutiques and antique stores.

David:

Driving out to Galena, IL for an early lunch at Dirty Gurts, hiking in the territory followed by golf at The General. Then finish up by grabbing a pizza from the Country Store for dinner.

Maria:

The best local trip for me is always to Michigan. We had the opportunity when our kids were growing up to spend spring and summers at church camp in Saugatuck. They are easily some of the best times we spent together. Saugatuck is a wonderful arts-centered community with many art galleries to explore. The beaches are beautiful, rarely crowded, and there are wonderful hiking trails in the area, too. There is apple picking in the fall and wineries of course, but for me the opportunity to be out in nature and away from the bustle of daily life was always such a reset.

Caroline:

For a day-only trip, I had a great time at Apple Holler to go apple picking. It was fun trying new varieties and all the delicious fall desserts they had at the time certainly didn’t hurt. I also tacked on Mars Cheese Castle on the way home, because why not.

For a weekend trip around Chicago, Green Lake, WI is great to visit. I had family with a house on the lake for a while. Activities there were boating, fishing, reading on the dock and going to Norton’s, which has great food and beautiful views of the lake.

Robert:

A trip out to Cantigny in Wheaton, IL for a day of golfing and hiking, capped off by a visit to the Dairy Queen in nearby Lombard, which has one of the few remaining original DQ signs.
